This one-of-a-kind scroll is exactly like very other copy of If a Carp Dreams of the Milky Way except that its margins are filled with thoughtful reflections by textile artist Kaythi. Kaythi's work is at the intersection of craft tradition, dissemination and pedagogy and her reponses to Jasmine's poetry allow readers into that persepective. If you're into secondhand books, queer "whole assed theory", and handwritten letters, I hate to be bossy but you need this.

The first image depicts this specific scroll by Kaythi, and the rest of the images are of the regular edition of If a Carp Dreams of the Milky Way. Just to e clear, the marginalia goes all the way down.

Now you can add to your collection of Penrose Press projects with something totally unique. We've made a scroll with Jasmine Gui's heart-stopping poetry and Brianna's careful illustrative support. The poetry deals with grief and other existential questions so it may not be for everyone, but for some of you it may be a balm, a witness to your own feelings too big to process.

There is an old Chinese idiom that says, if a carp is able to swim upstream against the Yellow River and leap over the waterfall, it will transform into a dragon.

To those who grieve and to those who hold space for grief, this is for you.

Each element of this scroll has been handmade for Penrose Press by Brianna Tosswill. Special thanks to Open Studio's printmaking facilities in Toronto, Ontario. The images are printed from carved linoleum onto Jougami paper using a Vandercook Proof Press No. 4T. The text is printed from a combination of lead type and polymer plates. This scroll can be displayed as a wall hanging or kept like a book on your shelf.

A note on scroll care: All the scrolls will be shipped rolled. They can be stored rolled indefinitely. If you wish to display the scroll hung on a wall, you can iron it on medium heat to remove the creases. Place a piece of tissue paper between the scroll and the iron and avoid the glued seams if you can. It will be pressed smooth and ready to hang in no time!
